EMPTYING THE TOMBS OF MASS INCARCERATION TOGETHER

ONE PARISH ONE PRISONER

Immaculate Conception / St. Joseph of Chicago parish

Hi Team!

You’re on the board for our Chicago chapter! You’re the first one. This is great! We’re honored to be partners with Kolbe House to build this track for Illinois churches to know and love their incarcerated brothers and sisters.

Here are the on-boarding steps (in more detail at /nextsteps).

  1. Church Leadership Blessing

  2. Congregational Awareness

  3. Team Assembly (5-7, including pastoral staff)

  4. Underground Ministries Pairs You with Your Incarcerated Friend

  5. Schedule Kickoff Orientation

If you’re wanting to join the Parish Team, this is where you’re supposed to be. The initial monthly commitment is reading a learning module, meeting with your team to discuss and plan, and writing two letters—that’s three hours/month. As your incarcerated friend’s release date approaches, there will be more planning and looping in your congregation to welcome them home, letters will become in-facility emails, then phone calls, then video calls, then in-person visits. Then they’ll be able to come home.

Get prepared by completing the pre-kickoff homework and officially registering as a team member. We’ll get you in our database and loop you in when we’re ready for the next step.

We just found out about this interview and book. We love it. It’s an incredibly useful crash course in mass incarceration and the church’s role/response. Please listen when you get a chance. We’re working on how to best implement it into the learning modules.
